University of Reading

After three rejections from Leeds, Lancaster, and Brunel, I got a conditional offer. It’s from Reading. I’m in a euphoric state of mind, and I’d like to take up a paragraph to boast about it. Originally, I really wanted to go to Loughborough, but after the interview they still haven’t reached out to me with an offer, even though I thought it went successful. Reading, on the other side, was a different experience. At first, they completely forgot about my application for Graphic Design, but I decided to remind them by sending a sort of a follow-up email. After a few days, Reading asked for my online portfolio (no interviews) and a piece of written work. I replied, by giving a link, and a link. This is how Reading replied (at 1AM in the morning), before eventually giving me an offer with a condition that I pass my Foundation in Art & Design:

Dear Nikolay,

It was great to see your portfolio and written work as part of your application to study at Reading.

Our panel was impressed with your very strong illustration and photography work but, most tellingly, by what seemed like a hugely sophisticated grasp of both hand lettering and digital typography. Your passion for design -- and your willingness to write about it with such flair and respect -- mark you out as a natural candidate for our exceptionally thoughtful and academic course. Honestly Nick, I feel like this might be the perfect place to help you develop your undoubted skills into a fascinating set of career options. I’m only ashamed we have reached your application so late in the process. I’m so sorry if we’ve kept you waiting.

If you haven’t heard from them already, our admissions team will be in touch shortly, making you an offer to study in the Department of Typography & Graphic Communication at Reading in the Autumn. Hopefully you have enough information to make up your mind about whether Graphic Communication at Reading is the right course for you. We certainly feel you’d be an asset to our Department. Please do let me know if there is anything else that you would like to know about the course.

All going well, I look forward to welcoming you in September.

Very personal. I mean, what can I say? I feel honoured! After the rejections, receiving such a welcoming congratulations (they were even apologising for the delay) makes me feel elated. My mother was very happy, and I in turn was happy that she was happy :)
